[The Big Data Era] When Product Certification Bodies Encounter Big Data
[2025-12-25]

Data and statistics are crucial components of enterprise quality management. Management gurus such as Deming and Drucker all listed data statistics as a core element of enterprise quality management activities. In today's information-explosive world, big data has become an important part of global economics and plays an increasingly vital role in various modern economic activities, inventions, and developments.

Compared to traditional data statistics and analysis, big data allows managers to obtain more accurate predictive information, thus gaining a more precise understanding of the business situation and ultimately translating this data and information into more accurate business decisions. For example, in the operations of ordinary brick-and-mortar retailers, operators can typically only record and track which products were sold and which were not, but cannot link this purchase information to specific consumers. However, online retailers can do this. They can not only track what products consumers ultimately purchase, but also know which other products and websites they have browsed, and understand the influence of factors such as promotions, page design, and content delivery on different consumers. Ultimately, online operators can integrate this massive amount of data through specific algorithms and predict the goods or services that consumers (individuals or groups) will need in the future.

In fact, big data is not only successfully applied to emerging industries, but it also has the potential to revolutionize traditional industries, including product certification bodies.

For product certification bodies, quality management is the core of certification work. Big data has broad application potential in various aspects, including their own business quality management, improvement of certified product quality, and enhancement of certification service quality. Utilizing big data technology for comprehensive business quality management is a new management path worth exploring in depth for product certification bodies.

Certification Business Quality Control

The quality control of a product certification body's certification business directly affects the impartiality and accuracy of certification results. Typically, product certification business includes certification acceptance, factory inspection and conformity verification, sample testing, certification decision, and post-certification surveillance. Existing quality control measures include controlling personnel qualifications and capabilities, the standardization of certification processes, the appropriateness of certification criteria, the comprehensiveness of inspection content, and the consistency of certified products. Taking the timeliness of key process nodes in factory inspections and the effective monitoring of inspection conclusions as an example, two common problems exist in actual quality control operations: First, product certification bodies often use sampling inspections to monitor timeliness and effectiveness, leading to uncertainty in the results; second, sampling inspections are inherently delayed, with overdue or ineffective issues only being discovered in post-inspections, hindering timely rectification.

However, big data technology offers new solutions to these problems. Due to its real-time processing capabilities, product certification bodies can utilize big data technology to monitor the entire factory inspection and testing process in real time, transforming timeliness control from post-inspection to early warning. Furthermore, the effectiveness management of factory inspections can be achieved through real-time comparison of various audit findings with audit criteria using big data technology, promptly identifying problems during the audit process and helping inspection teams and certification bodies make more accurate audit conclusions, thereby improving certification effectiveness.

Improving Certified Product Quality

The quality of certified products is one of the most important concerns for product certification bodies. Typically, certification companies control this primarily through monitoring process parameters and product testing during the production process. In most industrial products, process inspection and finished product inspection are not comprehensive, often resulting in uncertainties in inspection results. Furthermore, the correlation between production environment, equipment conditions, process parameters, and product quality is insufficiently identified, hindering timely and accurate process adjustments. Now, big data technology offers a more suitable solution. Product certification bodies can leverage their information advantages to collect (even in real-time) as much process parameter and testing data as possible from different certified companies. Using big data technology, they can identify the relationships between various process parameters and finished product quality. Based on the specific equipment, processes, environment, and other management information of each certified company, they can predict and assess the quality of certified products, ultimately helping them improve product quality, strictly control quality, and enhance the effectiveness of certification.

Improving Certification Service Quality

The use of big data technology will diversify the management and services for product certification companies. Currently, many product certification bodies' management and services for certified companies only include simple certification services and limited training, resulting in a narrow service scope and a lack of personalization. By fully utilizing big data technology, product certification bodies can collect broader quality and customer information (such as industry trends, overall quality status, best manufacturing methods, equipment and process parameters, supplier quality information, customer needs, preferences, and distribution details). This will not only help certified companies improve the quality of their certified products but also comprehensively enhance their ability to meet legal and regulatory requirements and customer needs, thereby effectively improving the service quality of product certification bodies.
